Experience the first signs of spring on the prairie! You’re invited to join Groundswell Conservancy for a special walk to see pasque flowers — one of the earliest-blooming perennials — on the beautiful drumlin at Westport Prairie. These upright, bell-shaped blooms range in color from deep purple to soft lavender, and occasionally, white. They emerge shortly after the first leaves and are a treasured sight each spring.
(Please note: Meet at the farmstead, not the small parking lot at the top of the hill.)
We’ll take a one-mile roundtrip walk from the farmstead out to the 14-acre drumlin — a striking remnant of the historic Empire Prairie. The path includes a moderate incline up to the top of the drumlin, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views and blooming pasque flowers.
Along the way, BJ Byers, our Land Management Director, will highlight recent restoration work, including prairie plantings and controlled burns. He’ll also share what’s ahead for Westport Prairie this year.
This is a great opportunity to explore a state natural area, soak in the prairie’s tranquility and witness the quiet beauty of spring. We hope you can join us!
Please email Amy Mertz at amy@groundswellconservancy.org or call 608-258-9797, ext. 402, if you can no longer attend or will be arriving late so we don’t hold up the group’s departure to the drumlin.
